:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from bearded academic -- Must read for AS historians : An important book. Blair goes through a massive set of archaeological reports and makes a good case that the shortage of AS buildings found argues they used a style of building that typically place posts in lintels such that all you get is a slight trace (no post holes). There’s other insightful stuff but I found this alone made the book well worth reading ( Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2019 )

However it is marred by one crashingly inappropriate remark. On the final page, in the penultimate paragraph, Prof. Blair writes: 'This project was finished in 2016, which will not be remembered as a positive one in the history of relations between the English and their various neighbours.' I gave the book four stars because it is beautifully produced on excellent paper, but it was too scholarly for me. I read up to about 200 pages but found myself not really understanding very much and couldn't understand many of the diagrams. I started to skip through some pages and have now reached chapter 11 out of 12. It looks nice on my shelf though ! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 1, 2020 )
