• 2.0 out of 5 stars from harmonista222 -- Horror That Tries Way, WAY Too Hard : First, I applaud any author with the talent and discipline to publish a blockbuster novel (in two languages, nonetheless). Second, I very much wanted to like this book. It's rooted in traditional folk horror -- a genre I feel is sadly under-represented in today's literary landscape. It's also a clear nod to both the legendary W.W. Jacobs short "The Monkey's Paw," and Stephen King's "Pet Sematary" -- which is, itself, a masterful tribute to that earlier tale. In fairness, too, the core "HEX" concept and associated visuals are pretty darn terrifying. So let me try to articulate why this story didn't work for me at all: ( Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2017 )

• 3.0 out of 5 stars from Rae Regenbogen -- I wouldn’t read it again, but I did finish it. So that’s something. : This author seems to have a huge preoccupation with women’s nipples, breasts, and foreheads. He basically ONLY described women by their breasts, weight, and foreheads, and I only remember one instance where he described anything about a man’s appearance. I found that to be annoying. There was also quite a bit of violence towards women. All in all, this author’s style and plot-line seems to be pretty stereotypical writing for horror books written by a male author. • 2.0 out of 5 stars from DieselEstate -- The Promise Never Arrives : Oh My Gosh. I was gripped by this book, in the sense that it is well written. The characters and their lives are fully formed and, well rounded ... but - and it's a bloody big but: It's just not scary. Katherine Van Wyler is a bit of spectral nonsense. Ask yourself: Are you really going to be frightened by a 350 year old woman just because her eyes and mouth are sewn up? The book itself is a good story, just not a good horror story. Towards the end of the book, Van Wyler is used as a good allegory as to how humans can actually build up a sense of evil, all by themselves without the cause of that same evil being what they'd assumed it to be. Their town is cursed, haunted by the Black Rock Witch – a 17th century woman whose eyes and mouth have been sewn shut. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from KIKAREN -- Way too long - almost glacial : This is a gothic horror novel; very successful and much praised. The cover has a quote from the master himself, Stephen King [totally brilliant original] and indeed the structure and the narrative definitely owe a lot to him. He could have written it, actually. Its number 8793 in Amazon books this morning but No. 19 in Horror. Definitely not my usual thing. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 12, 2016 )
• 4.0 out of 5 stars from Richie -- Well written, original and imaginative : Well written, original and imaginative. It has some marks of having being written by a young male, as witness the frequent prurient revisits to breasts and the gratuitous cruelty. It reads like a Steven King novel, with references to modern Americana, but was rewritten from Dutch. Action taken place in and around a small town which no one can permanently leave because it is haunted by a 17th-century witch. The townsfolk manage the witch's appearances so as to prevent dangerous incidents and so as not to deter tourists. On one occasion a group of male teens defies the local ordinances of leaving her alone and sets out to torment the witch. Although she is an apparition able to appear and vanish instantly, she has physical attributes like bleeding when cut. They are extremely cruel, and on the final occasion end up forcing her into a pit and stoning her. The horror of this cruelty comes over in the reaction of a teenager who witnesses it but does not take part. Later, as history led the townsfolk to expect, the witch seems to retaliate by causing death and suffering in the town. Found out, the teens, who endangered the whole town by their actions, are flogged in public according to an old ordinance. The flogging, rather than their cruelty and irresponsible endangering of their community, is presented as the most horrifying event in the book. Maybe here the liberal Dutch provenance shows. West Point Military Academy is not far off, and the military are aware of the witch phenomenon. Half way through, this led me to think that maybe the witch would turn out to be some experimental robot or combination of robot and holograph, but that was not so. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from EllenD -- Hex : Deciding to read horror for the whole of October finally gave me chance to unearth Hex from my TBR mountain. I heard a lot about this book on it's release and had purchased not long after. My verdict? I absolutely loved it!!
